Kbal Spean, river of thousand lingas in Cambodia

Kbal Spean is an ancient Hindu Pilgrimage site in the jungles on the south side of Kulen mountains about one hour drive from the town Siem Reap. It is about one hour walk from the bottom of the hills. Images of Hindu Gods and "Shivalinga" are believed to be carved possibly in 11th to 12th century. Style: Bapuon. Reign: Udayadityavarman II. This is an Angkorian era archaeological site.It is situated along a 150m stretch of the Stung Kbal Spean river. The site consists of stone carvings in sandstone formations carved in the river bed and the rocks on the bank of the river. This is more commonly referred to as in English, "River of Thousand Lingas" or in Sanskrit "Sahasra Linga". The present name actually means "Head Water Bridge", a reference to the natural rock bridge at the site. It takes a 2 KM uphill walk deep in the jungles to reach the carvings. Along the path you will find beautiful boulder formation and scenery. Thousands of "Shiva Linga" have been carved along the river bed. The carvings of Hindu "Trimurthi", Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara (Shiva) are present along the river bed and nearby rocks. The images of Laxmi, Uma (Parvathi), Bull, Naga and others are also carved.
